The Lost River Gorge & Boulder Caves is an adventure that combines the beauty and mysteries of nature with the excitement of discovery! A ¾ mile boardwalk is your path through the gorge. Your journey can be as easy or as ambitious as you choose: you may remain on the boardwalk, or accept the challenge of exploring the boulder caves.

The Lost River runs through a narrow gorge, where you’ll find waterfalls and countless cascades pouring over the rocks. Gaps between huge boulders create small caves for visitors to explore. The first known people to discover the gorge were Royal and Lyman Jackman, who found Shadow Cave by accident while fishing in 1852.

The trail is not accessible in winter, when the parking area for Lost River is gated and locked. Lost River State Park is located near the site of the 1756 Battle of Lost River, a battle fought during the French and Indian War. It’s also home to the Lee Cabin, the summer retreat of Henry “Lighthorse Harry” Lee, a Revolutionary War general and father of Civil War General Robert E. Lee. Lost River Valley Campground is located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Surrounded on three sides by National Forest, the campsites are nestled between the banks of Lost River and Walker Brook.
